Giving back is an integral part of the University of Miami’s mission. The institution has enjoyed a close and synergistic relationship with South Florida that has enriched the overall quality of life through varied intellectual, economic, outreach, health care and cultural contributions. The University of Miami’s Life Science project has contributed $700,000 in grants to not-for-profit community organizations that serve Overtown and surrounding areas. Its Strengths, Prevention, Empowerment and Community change (SPEC) program is an engaging, youth-based program in the Overtown-Town Park Village community with a goal of developing youths’ strengths through mentoring partnerships.
